Thirteen-lined ground squirrels favor short, well-drained grass rather than tall prairie. In Iowa they are often encountered on mowed parkland, roadsides, cemeteries, pastures, and recreation grounds, where their upright posture and striped backs are conspicuous.
Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge and Iowa state parks include maintained grass near their natural areas, while open sites around Decorah provide additional viewing opportunities. Watch from a distance near burrow entrances instead of blocking the animal’s retreat.
The records are strongly seasonal: sightings surge from April through July and nearly disappear in winter. That reflects true dormancy underground during hibernation, so the frontmatter’s year-round shorthand should be interpreted cautiously.
