Indiana tricolored-bat records reflect a species that hibernates in caves and mines and uses forested waterways during the active season, making southern Indiana karst especially important context beyond northern sites such as Indiana Dunes. The February–May reporting peak overlaps late hibernation and spring emergence, when monitored roosts produce more detections.
The 36 iNaturalist records document encounters, not tricolored-bat abundance. Cave access is restricted, handling records are specialized, and flying bats are difficult to identify visually, so the map is heavily shaped by monitoring locations and cannot compare populations across Indiana.
