The white-footed mouse is Kentucky’s most frequently recorded native mouse, with 339 records spread across every month of the year. Few Kentucky mammals turn up this consistently, in this many different kinds of forest.

At home from sandstone cliffs to river bottoms

This generalist does well almost anywhere with woodland cover, and Kentucky’s records reflect that range. Reports cluster around the sandstone cliff-lines and hardwood coves of Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest in the east, and around the oak-hickory bottomlands of Land Between the Lakes in the far west. Few Kentucky mammals span that much of the state’s terrain.

A cavity-nester with an opportunistic diet

White-footed mice nest in tree cavities, stump hollows, brush piles, and abandoned bird or squirrel nests, and Red River Gorge’s abundant rockhouses and cliff crevices offer no shortage of that kind of shelter. They forage at night for acorns, hickory nuts, seeds, and insects, and their habit of caching food helps disperse the seeds of the oak-hickory forest they depend on.

Status in Kentucky

The white-footed mouse is native to Kentucky, and NatureServe ranks it S5, secure. It’s recorded in every month of the year across the state, a pattern that fits an adaptable, non-hibernating animal rather than one with a narrow seasonal window.
