White-footed Mice are widespread in Maryland’s deciduous woods, hedgerows, and brushy edges, but their nocturnal habits make casual sightings uncommon. Around Blackwater, Eastern Neck, and Assateague, signs are more likely beneath logs and in seed-rich woodland than on open trails; observation should never involve disturbing nests or cover.
Records occur year-round, with stronger signals from May through August and again in October. Those patterns combine animal activity with seasonal survey effort, so quiet months should not be read as absence.
