Indiana’s open-data record set holds only 12 reports of the woodland vole, one of the thinnest counts of any Indiana mammal in this survey. That scarcity says more about how well this vole avoids notice than about how many actually live in the state.

A life spent under the leaf litter

Woodland voles tunnel through the top few inches of soil beneath forest leaf litter and rarely come into the open, which goes a long way toward explaining why so few turn up in casual records. Indiana’s stretches of well-drained hardwood forest floor, like the sandstone ravines of Turkey Run State Park and the ridge-and-hollow woods of Hoosier National Forest, offer exactly the loose, leaf-covered ground this vole digs through.

Seventeen records, mostly in one month

Close to half of Indiana’s woodland vole records come from a single month, May, when spring rain and thinning leaf litter make its shallow surface runways easier to notice. The rest of the year, this vole’s tunnels stay hidden under litter it almost never leaves.

Status in Indiana

NatureServe ranks the woodland vole S5, secure, and it’s native to Indiana. The short record list says more about how rarely this vole surfaces than about how it’s doing across the hardwood forest floor it depends on.
