A gopher with a tiny address
Endemic species don’t get much more localized than this. The Wyoming pocket gopher’s whole known range sits in the wheat-and-prairie country of southeastern Wyoming, centered on Goshen and Platte counties near the Nebraska line. It is small for a pocket gopher and pale, sandy-brown in color, matching the light soils it digs. Fur-lined cheek pouches, big incisors, and the usual tunneling build mark it as a member of the family, but its neighbors are few: the northern pocket gopher lies to the west and north, and the plains pocket gopher to the east.
Between 1915 and 1979, taxonomists folded it into the northern pocket gopher as a subspecies. Restudy of skulls and distribution restored it as a full species, a reminder that Wyoming’s mammal list still held surprises that recently.
Sandy soil, scarce records
Everything about this gopher’s life happens underground. It digs extensive tunnels through deep sandy soil, feeding on roots, bulbs, and stems it harvests from below, and surfaces mainly as a line of mounds. That way of life, plus a genuinely small range, explains the thin record set: fewer than twenty recent records in a state that keeps good mammal data.
Scarcity of records is not the same as scarcity of animals. Pocket gophers are underreported everywhere because seeing one takes luck or trapping. Still, for a species with this little range, every confirmed colony carries weight, and the IUCN’s Least Concern rating rests on the population being stable within its small footprint rather than widespread.
Why it matters
A single-county-scale species is inherently fragile. Conversion of sandy prairie to crops, changes in irrigation, and even road work can erase colonies, and there is no backup population elsewhere to draw from. Wyoming’s mammalogists know where most of the colonies are, which at least makes watching them possible.
The record set is correspondingly compact. Reports sit in a tight cluster on the Nebraska border country, and the honest reading of the empty space around them is a mix of real range limits and the simple difficulty of documenting an animal that almost never comes above ground.
