At the Orange County Animal Shelter, among many dogs hoping for homes, there was a big, shy dog named Nicholas. He was scared and quiet when he came in as a stray.
He wasn’t the young, spry puppy most visitors were looking for, and as days turned into weeks, Nicholas remained at the shelter, watching families come and go.
Nicholas Waits Patiently
The shelter staff and volunteers just knew how special Nicholas was.
They would let him out to play each day, and that’s when his happy, friendly side came out.
He also loved to cuddle and be close to people who were kind to him.
He was a gentle giant, always overlooked, and it made the shelter staff very sad to see.
The Shelter Tries Everything
The people at the shelter worked hard to help Nicholas find a home.
They shared pictures and videos of him playing and being his sweet self on the internet and TV. They also arranged an event called “Pick Nick Picnic Saturday,” where someone could come and spend time with him outside his kennel.
But something amazing happened.
Nicholas Finds His Person
The day before the “Pick Nick Picnic Saturday,” a woman came for Nicholas.
That same woman had met Nicholas a week earlier and couldn’t stop thinking about him.
“She just genuinely came in and fell in love with the dog organically,” said Bryant from Orange County Animal Shelter.
Her return led her to adopt Nicholas immediately. She said, “You know what? He’s not going back inside his kennel. He’s going home.”
A New Start for Nicholas
This story shows there’s a right time for everything, and patience can lead to the best outcomes.
For Nicholas, the wait had been worth it. His journey to find a home was a long one, but it led him to the right place, at the right moment, with the right person.
