Bison shaped Nebraska’s grasslands historically, but animals seen today occur in managed conservation herds or private herds rather than as a free-ranging statewide population. Records therefore map places where herds are maintained as much as they map natural habitat.
Where to look
Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge is the clearest public destination, with bison using mixed-grass prairie and river-valley uplands. Nebraska National Forest and other western sites may also produce records, but access and herd status vary. Stay inside designated viewing areas and give bison far more room than their calm appearance suggests.
Bison can be observed year-round in managed areas. August leads the Nebraska reports, but herd access, visitor volume, and reporting effort strongly influence that pattern.
