The complete county distribution, spread across 22 California counties. Every occurrence record falls in one county, so these sum to the total. Counties from GBIF and US Census boundaries.

Belding’s ground squirrel reports climb into California’s mountain meadows and open country near conifer forest. The Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe region provide a much better fit than the hot Central Valley or southern desert refuges named as general landmarks.

The record season is strikingly short. Reports jump in May, crest in June and July, then nearly vanish by late fall as squirrels remain underground and snow limits access. Busy summer roads and trails add many observations, so that sharp peak reflects both animal activity and easier travel in the high country.
