California myotis are among the smallest bats on the Oregon coast, with a slow, fluttering flight that distinguishes them from the more direct, purposeful flight of larger bat species sharing the same airspace near Cape Perpetua Scenic Area’s rocky headlands.
Records cluster from June through September, led by a September peak, tracking the stretch when summer maternity colonies are most active before bats move to winter roosts. NatureServe ranks the species S3, vulnerable, in Oregon, and its record leans heavily on GBIF specimen data over photographs, a fair reflection of a small, fast-moving bat that’s hard to identify without close examination.
