A pocket-sized bat with a masked face
The California myotis ranks among the smallest bats in North America, small enough at 1.2 to 1.4 inches long to squeeze into cracks too narrow for its bulkier relatives. Its ears run to a medium size, about half an inch, each tipped with a slender, pointed tragus that helps it read returning echoes in tight spaces. Fur tends toward dull brown or tan rather than glossy, and the face, ears, and wing membranes are dark enough that many individuals look like they’re wearing a faint mask.
That masked look isn’t unique, and telling this species from its western relatives takes a careful eye. The western small-footed myotis shows a sharper, more contrasted mask against pale buff fur, while the California myotis usually reads darker and plainer overall. Yuma myotis has a flatter forehead and a more even brown coat. Cave myotis settles the question by size alone: it’s a noticeably bulkier bat with bigger ears and paler underparts, so a side-by-side look rules it out fast.

From coastal Alaska to desert canyons
This bat’s range runs the length of the American West, with records reaching from Alaska and Washington down through California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon, and Texas. Almost 656 records collected since 2000 sketch a pattern anchored on the Pacific Coast. California alone contributes well over half of them, with Washington, New Mexico, and Colorado rounding out the next tier.
It isn’t picky about habitat as long as there’s a crevice to hide in and insects to chase nearby. Coastal forest, desert wash, streamside thicket, mixed conifer woodland, and urban buildings all show up in its habitat list. That flexibility explains why it turns up almost anywhere in the West. Elevation records back this up too. Sightings span from just 20 feet above sea level to nearly 9,400 feet, with a typical record landing around 2,770 feet. The species seems just as comfortable in a coastal lowland as in a mountain canyon, as long as bark, rock, or a building crack offers shelter nearby.
Hunting low and slow after dark
The California myotis eats invertebrates exclusively, and it does the job after sunset. Beetles, grasshoppers and crickets, and other flying insects make up its diet, along with the occasional spider or other arachnid picked off a surface. It hunts by echolocation, reading its own returning calls to find prey and dodge obstacles in the dark.
Its flight style sets it apart from bats built for open-sky pursuit. Rather than coursing high and fast, it flutters low and slow along streambanks, forest edges, and building walls. That’s a pattern suited to picking insects out of clutter, not chasing them across open air. Records show it staying active well into the cooler months, with a clear surge in observations through late summer and into September. That’s later than many bats keep up regular feeding runs. The extended window likely reflects how far south and how low in elevation much of its range sits. Mild coastal and desert nights stay workable long after mountain populations of other bats have gone quiet.

Roosts, a single pup, and a long life for its size
By day, this bat disappears into whatever tight space is on offer: loose bark, a rock crevice, a mine opening, or a gap under roof shingles or siding. Its small size lets it use spaces too narrow for bulkier bats. That habit shows up across every habitat it occupies, from wild canyon country to city neighborhoods.
Females typically raise a single pup each year. They gather in small maternity roosts through the birthing season, while males often roost alone or in smaller, looser groups. For an animal this tiny, longevity is a genuine standout. Wild individuals have been documented living to around 15 years, a lifespan far out of proportion to its size.
A least concern bat that still depends on quiet shelter
The IUCN lists the California myotis as Least Concern, a status that reflects its wide range and its tolerance for many different roost types and habitats. That resilience doesn’t mean the species faces no pressure at all. It depends heavily on loose bark, rock crevices, and building gaps for daytime shelter, so losing old trees, sealing mine openings, or renovating a building can erase roosts it has used for years.
White-nose syndrome remains the biggest disease threat facing hibernating bats across North America. Any species that uses caves or mines for winter shelter sits within that broader risk picture, even one that isn’t among the hardest-hit so far. This bat also readily uses buildings and other structures, so it lives closer to people than many wild mammals do. Simple tolerance, more than active management, is often what keeps it holding its place in the region’s night skies.
