California sea lion reports hug the Pacific margin, especially rocky islands, harbor structures, and productive nearshore water. The Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, and San Francisco’s waterfront create very different viewing settings, from offshore colonies to animals resting beside busy docks.

Reports rise through spring and reach their clearest high point in June, though strong totals continue into late summer. Breeding movements, coastal conditions, boat traffic, and the number of shore watchers all help shape that pattern.

Large gatherings at a familiar haul-out can produce many records from one small place. Quiet stretches of coast and offshore water receive less attention, so the observation total isn’t a measure of how many sea lions use California waters.
