The snowshoe hare specialist
The Canada lynx built its whole life around one animal: the snowshoe hare. Hares swing through a boom-and-bust cycle that repeats roughly every 8 to 11 years. Lynx numbers follow that rhythm a year or two behind. When hares boom, more kittens survive to adulthood. When the hare population crashes, lynx numbers crash right behind it. Documented prey also includes red squirrels, ruffed grouse, and northern flying squirrels. Lynx occasionally take a young deer when the chance comes up. Gray wolves prey on lynx where the two overlap, but hares still make up most of the diet almost everywhere lynx live. When local hare numbers collapse, lynx don’t just go hungry. They travel. Radio-collared cats have turned up more than a hundred miles from their home territory during a bust year, still hunting for ground where hares remain plentiful.
Built for snow, not for surprise: telling it from a bobcat
A lynx is built to walk on top of snow, not through it. Its paws spread wide when the toes fan out, working like a pair of built-in snowshoes. That keeps a 20-pound cat from sinking into fresh powder the way a similarly sized bobcat would. Long black ear tufts, a heavy facial ruff, and noticeably longer legs give it a rangier look than its southern cousin. The clearest field mark is the tail. A lynx’s short tail is black all the way around the tip, while a bobcat’s tail is black on top and white underneath. Bobcat coats also run more strongly spotted, while lynx fur reads as a uniform grizzled gray-brown. That distinction matters most where the two species actually share ground, in the northern Rockies and parts of New England.

Boreal range, from Alaska’s spruce forests to Colorado’s high peaks
Most US sightings come from Alaska’s boreal spruce forest, which accounts for the largest share of records in every month of the year. South of the Canadian border, resident populations hang on in Maine’s north woods, Minnesota’s Arrowhead region, and the mountains of Montana, Idaho, and Washington. Smaller numbers reach Vermont and New Hampshire. Colorado tells a different story. Trapping and habitat loss wiped out the state’s native lynx by the mid-20th century. The population living in the San Juan Mountains today exists only because Colorado wildlife officials released more than 200 lynx trapped in Alaska and Canada, in a program that ran from 1999 to 2006. That reintroduction is why elevation records for the species stretch from sea level on the Alaska coast to nearly 12,300 feet in the Colorado high country. A typical sighting, though, sits closer to 1,600 feet. What ties both extremes together is the same thing: deep, reliable snowpack and dense conifer cover that keeps hares available all winter.

A ten-year rhythm written into its biology
Female lynx reach breeding condition around 16 months old, males closer to 19 months. A single litter arrives each spring, averaging about three kittens after a two-month gestation. In a hare-rich year, most of those kittens survive long enough to disperse and hold their own territory. In the years right after a hare crash, few do. Some females skip breeding entirely rather than raise a litter with nothing to feed it. Individual lynx are built to outlast several of these swings. Recorded lifespans run past 26 years, so a single cat typically lives through multiple full hare booms and busts, not just one.
Mostly nocturnal, seen mostly by day
Camera-trap and radio-collar studies describe a cat that does most of its hunting after dark or at dusk and dawn. It still-hunts along hare runways, closing the last few feet in a rush. Yet the recorded sighting clock skews toward mid-morning and midday. That pattern reflects when hikers, researchers, and trail cameras are actually out looking, not when the animal itself is moving. A lynx crossing a trail at noon sticks in memory precisely because that isn’t when the species is normally active. Outside a brief winter breeding window, adults live largely solitary lives, marking territory with scent and scrapes rather than direct confrontation. Home ranges commonly run from around 6 to more than 115 square miles, depending on how many hares are around. They expand sharply in lean years, as a cat works harder to find enough food.
Threatened in the Lower 48, secure across its northern range
The IUCN rates the Canada lynx Least Concern worldwide, reflecting healthy, lightly trapped populations across the bulk of its range in Alaska and Canada. South of the border, the story changes. The US Fish and Wildlife Service lists the contiguous US population as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act. That status traces to historical trapping pressure and logging patterns that favored open young forest over the dense cover hares need. Shrinking snowpack at the range’s warm southern edge adds another squeeze. Colorado’s reintroduced population is one of the rarer endangered-species stories with a genuinely happy middle chapter. By the mid-2010s, biologists were documenting third- and fourth-generation, wild-born kittens in the San Juan Mountains. That’s proof the population became self-sustaining decades after the original release.
