Why warthogs have warts

The bumps on a warthog’s face aren’t true warts. They’re thick pads of skin and tissue that protect the eyes and jaw during fights. Males develop the largest pads, along with two pairs of tusks formed from constantly growing canine teeth.

The upper tusks sweep outward and upward, while the lower pair stays shorter and sharper. Warthogs have broad, flattened heads, sparse bristles, and a mane running down the neck and back. Their tails rise like flags when they run, helping group members follow through tall grass.

Unlike many pigs, warthogs have long legs and relatively little body fat. That build suits open ground but leaves them vulnerable to cold. It also explains why they aren’t naturally adapted to most of the United States.

Kneeling to graze and backing into shelter

Common warthogs live across much of sub-Saharan Africa in savanna, grassland, and open woodland. They favor country with short grass, drinking water, and empty burrows nearby. Their tough wrist pads let them kneel while cropping low plants with their broad lips.

Grass makes up most of the diet, but roots, bulbs, fruit, bark, insects, and carrion can supplement it. During dry periods, warthogs dig with the snout and tusks to reach underground food. They need regular water when it is available and often wallow in mud to cool down and deter parasites.

Warthogs usually take over burrows dug by aardvarks rather than excavate their own. They back inside so the tusks face the entrance, leaving a predator to confront the dangerous end. Mothers may block the opening while piglets shelter deeper inside.

Sounders, boars, and piglets

Females and their young live in groups called sounders, sometimes joined by related females. Adult males tend to travel alone or in loose bachelor groups. Group members communicate with grunts, squeals, scent, and raised tails.

Breeding often follows seasonal rainfall because fresh grass improves a mother’s condition. Males display, push, and fight for access to females, using facial pads to absorb blows. A female gives birth inside a burrow, where newborn piglets receive shelter from weather and predators.

Piglets begin following their mother after a short period but remain highly vulnerable. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, and large eagles can prey on warthogs. Adults often flee first and fight only when cornered, reaching open cover with surprising speed.

What scattered US reports mean

Common warthogs are native to Africa, not North America. The small number of US records, including reports from the Southwest, may involve fenced ranches, escapes, zoos, or records with uncertain locations. They don’t establish a native range or a self-sustaining wild population.

The observations are spread across months and several states, but such a tiny sample can’t support a seasonal pattern. Accessible places, reporting choices, and captive collections strongly shape the result. Records aren’t a population count, and one map point can’t show how an animal arrived.

Warthogs can be confused with feral pigs at a distance, yet the facial pads, upright mane, large curved tusks, and high-carried tail are distinctive. A careful record should document those features and the setting without approaching the animal.

Conservation in the native range

The IUCN lists the common warthog as Least Concern. It remains widespread, but local numbers can fall through drought, habitat loss, hunting, disease, and conflict with farmers. Fences can also block movement between water, feeding grounds, and shelter.

Warthogs sometimes benefit from ranchland and protected areas where short grass and artificial water are available. They can also damage crops or compete with livestock, creating pressure for control. Their future depends on keeping connected savanna while managing those conflicts locally.

Their burrow use, flexible diet, and alert social groups make warthogs resilient in a variable climate. Still, scattered American records shouldn’t be read as evidence of a broad US invasion. The species’ central natural-history story remains African, rooted in seasonal grasslands and the predators that share them.
