At home beside warm water

Coues’ oryzomys uses marshes, wet grass, pond margins, and thick vegetation near water. Long hind feet and strong swimming ability help it cross flooded ground. It may look like a large plain rat, but its habitat, proportions, and sharply two-toned tail help narrow an identification.

A tropical range with a tiny US edge

Most of the range lies south of the United States. Here, confirmed records are confined to far southern Texas. That edge position makes every record important, but it also raises the cost of a mistaken identification.

Nearby rice rats can be difficult to separate by sight. Museum measurements, skull details, or genetic evidence may be needed when a photograph doesn’t show enough. Old names and changing species limits add caution.

Feeding under cover

This rice rat eats both plant and animal food, including seeds and insects. It usually forages where dense growth offers an immediate escape. Swimming connects patches separated by shallow channels, while nests remain sheltered in vegetation.

Breeding responds to warm, productive conditions. Young are raised in concealed nests, and repeated litters are possible where food and cover persist. Flooding can rearrange usable habitat without making a wetland permanently unsuitable.
