A domestic cavy, not a small pig
The name is misleading twice over. Guinea pigs aren’t pigs, and their ancestors came from South America rather than Guinea. They belong to the cavy family, a group of sturdy plant-eating rodents. The domestic form probably descends mainly from a wild Andean cavy.
Unlike rats and mice, a guinea pig has no visible tail. It has a broad head, short neck, rounded body, and small ears. Selective breeding has produced smooth, rosetted, long, and curly coats in many colors. Those coat differences identify breeds, not separate wild species.
The front teeth keep growing throughout life. Regular chewing wears them down, an inheritance from ancestors that fed on tough vegetation. Their feet also differ from those of familiar mice, with four toes in front and three behind.
Life built around food and company
Guinea pigs communicate with whistles, purr-like sounds, chirps, and tooth chattering. Different calls can signal excitement, contact, alarm, or conflict. They don’t spend the day in one long sleep. Instead, rest comes in many short periods between feeding and social activity.

Plants make up their diet. Their digestive system is adapted to fibrous food, and food moves through a large hindgut where microbes help break it down. Like people and a few other mammals, guinea pigs can’t make their own vitamin C.
Young are unusually well developed at birth. They arrive furred, with open eyes, and can move and nibble solid food soon afterward. They still nurse, but they don’t pass through the helpless nestling stage seen in rats or mice.
What outdoor records can and can’t mean
Domestic guinea pigs don’t have a natural wild range. Reports from the United States can represent escaped or released pets, animals kept outdoors, incorrect locations, or mistaken identifications. A cluster of records therefore doesn’t establish a self-sustaining population.
This distinction matters because the occurrence display treats reports consistently across species. For a genuinely wild mammal, repeated points may outline habitat and range. For a domestic animal, the same points mainly trace human activity and reporting. Records are evidence that someone documented an animal, not proof that it belongs to the local wildlife community.
A long history with people
People in the Andes domesticated cavies thousands of years ago. Guinea pigs later spread around the world as household animals, research animals, and livestock. That history explains both their global familiarity and their lack of a wild counterpart matching today’s domestic breeds.

They aren’t evaluated like a naturally occurring wild species for conservation purposes. Their continued existence depends on people, while wild cavy species have their own ranges and conservation stories. Treating the domestic guinea pig as distinct from those wild relatives keeps both the biology and the occurrence record honest.
