The largest rodent alive, built for water

Nothing else classified as a rodent comes close to the capybara’s size. Its body is barrel-shaped and set low to the ground, with partially webbed toes that make it a confident swimmer rather than an animal that merely tolerates water. That build alone rules out confusion with any other mammal sharing its range, since no true rodent anywhere near its size exists to compete with the identification.

A South American wetland native, now loose in US wetlands

Its real home is the rivers, marshes, and wet grasslands of South America, where it lives as a genuinely wild, wetland-dependent animal. Confirmed US records come from Florida and Texas, and both trace back to escaped or released pets and exotic-animal collections rather than a population that migrated here on its own. Warm, wet habitat in both states happens to resemble its native range closely enough that an escaped animal can survive there for a while.

A magnet for perching birds
