Fishers roam Maine’s extensive forests, especially landscapes with mature trees, tangled understory, and down wood such as the North Woods around Baxter and Katahdin. These elusive mustelids are most often detected by tracks: paired or bounding prints that may wander between logs, ledges, and dense cover.

They are active in every season, but Maine observations are strongest from January through March, when snow records their movements and late-winter breeding increases travel. Despite the name, fishers are forest animals and are not closely tied to fish or open water.
