One of the few animals that can kill a porcupine
The fisher is a large, long-bodied member of the weasel family. Its coat runs dark brown to nearly black, and it carries a bushy tail and sharp, semi-retractable claws built for climbing. It’s best known for a genuinely rare skill: killing porcupines. It gets past the quills with speed and repeated bites, something almost no other predator manages. Its recorded prey list also includes snowshoe hares, flying squirrels, muskrats, birds, and rodents. Fishers will feed on moose carcasses when the chance comes up, and they eat fruit and mushrooms now and then.
Two forests, one continent apart
Fisher records cluster in two separate regions. One is the northern forest belt of Michigan, New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts. The other is a smaller Pacific population across California, Oregon, and Washington. Michigan alone accounts for more logged sightings than any other state. A sharp spike there in December likely reflects trapping-season survey effort rather than a true jump in fisher activity. Elevation records stay mostly under about 1,500 feet. Fishers favor lower forested ground over high mountains, and the records bear that out.
Active day and night, alone in the trees
Sightings logged around the clock show fishers moving at every hour, with no strong preference for day or night. They’re solitary animals, denning in hollow trees. They rarely tolerate other fishers nearby outside the breeding season. A typical litter holds three kits. A wild fisher lives around seven years on average.
Preyed on by bigger predators, and not yet formally assessed
Mountain lions, bobcats, Canada lynx, gray wolves, red foxes, and great horned owls all appear as documented predators of the fisher. Even a porcupine-killer has plenty to watch for. The species currently carries an IUCN status of Not Evaluated. That’s mostly a bookkeeping gap: fishers were reclassified into their own genus, Pekania, separate from martens, and a formal reassessment under the new name hasn’t caught up yet.
