Hispid pocket mice are nocturnal inhabitants of sandy or loose-soiled grassland, old fields, and open scrub. Oklahoma records are largely specimen-based, so the suggested public sites, including Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge, should be treated as habitat leads rather than dependable viewing stops.
The record spans the year but is concentrated in June and August–September. These small mice spend daylight underground and are rarely seen casually; tracks or tiny burrow entrances may be the only sign of their presence.
