A Coarse-Furred Giant Among Pocket Mice
Coarse fur gives this pocket mouse its name, and it’s the first thing to notice up close. The hair over the back and rump feels bristly rather than soft. Black-tipped guard hairs roughen a yellowish-brown to gray-brown coat, and pale underparts meet the darker back along a clean, buffy stripe down each side. At 7 to 9 inches from nose to tail tip, this is one of the larger pocket mice in its range. The build is compact and heavy-bodied, with a rounded head, dark eyes, and small rounded ears. The tail is long but plain, not the tufted, bicolored flag a kangaroo rat carries.
That size and texture help tell it apart from similar species. A desert pocket mouse shares the same general shape but looks slimmer and paler, with a smoother coat. Bailey’s pocket mouse can match it in size, yet shows a darker facial mask and a bolder, more contrasting tail pattern. In dry grassland at night, the coarse coat and buffy side stripe are the fastest field marks to check first.

Grassland Range From the Plains to the Desert’s Edge
Records place this species across eight states, concentrated in Oklahoma, Colorado, and Kansas, with fewer reports reaching Texas, New Mexico, the Dakotas, and Arizona. That spread points to a Great Plains and Southwest grassland animal rather than a strict desert dweller. It turns up in shortgrass and mixed-grass prairie, desert grassland, and other open, sandy-soiled country with enough grass and forb seed to make a night’s foraging worthwhile.
Elevation records cluster mostly in low to middle ground, with a median near 1,700 feet and a full span from about 480 to 5,500 feet. That fits an animal tied to workable, diggable soil rather than to any particular altitude. Habitat that pairs loose ground with steady seed production, from river-adjacent flats to grassy urban edges, seems to matter more than elevation on its own.
Nights Spent Filling Cheek Pouches and Sealing Burrows
This pocket mouse is nocturnal and mostly solitary. It spends daylight underground in a burrow it plugs shut behind itself. At night it forages for grass and forb seeds, rounding out the diet with a smaller share of green vegetation and the occasional insect. Seeds make up roughly four-fifths of what it eats. Like other pocket mice, it carries food in external, fur-lined cheek pouches instead of in its mouth. That lets it gather dry seed quickly and haul it back to storage without pausing to chew.
The burrow does double duty as pantry and shelter. A sealed entrance holds in moisture and keeps the day’s heat off the surface, while cached seed inside becomes either a future meal or, if forgotten, a new grass plant. That underground stash also cuts down time spent exposed above ground. Predators recorded taking this species include the long-nosed snake and the western massasauga, and a mouse that limits its time in the open gets caught less often.

Breeding Timed to the Grassland’s Wet Season
Breeding lines up with the warmer months, when seed and insect supply can support pregnancy and a growing litter. Gestation runs about 22 to 26 days, short even by rodent standards. A litter holds anywhere from two to nine young, averaging just over five, and a female can produce close to two litters a year when conditions allow. Wild lifespans are brief, typically around two years and rarely past four.
That flexible litter size suits a rodent living with boom-and-bust rainfall. A lean year likely means fewer young survive and adults conserve energy underground. A good year lets the same seed-caching habit support a larger next generation. Turnover is fast, but so is recovery.
A Least Concern Species Doing Outsized Underground Work
The IUCN lists the hispid pocket mouse as Least Concern, and its spread across eight states and a broad elevation range backs that call. Still, a common status doesn’t make the species trivial to its grassland. Every seed it caches is either a future meal or a missed one that grows into a new plant. Every burrow it digs loosens soil and opens a small disturbed patch other species can use.
Its future mostly tracks grassland quality rather than any single direct threat. Cropland conversion, heavy soil disturbance, and the loss of native seed-bearing plants can shrink suitable ground locally. Working landscapes that keep some loose soil and grass cover let the species hold on regardless. It’s easy to overlook, since it’s small and active only after dark, but across the central and southwestern grasslands it links seeds, soil, and the snakes and other predators that hunt it.
