Humpback whale reports gather along California’s productive Pacific waters, especially near Monterey Canyon, the continental shelf edge, and the Channel Islands. These places bring deep water, feeding areas, and regular boat traffic close enough for repeated observations.
Records build through spring, peak from June through September, and fall sharply in winter. That timing fits the busy feeding season off California, but it also overlaps calmer boating weather and heavy whale-watching effort. Sightings along familiar routes don’t count whales farther offshore.
