The lesser long-nosed bat is a migratory nectar-feeder that follows the desert's bloom north from Mexico each summer. Its long, brush-tipped tongue reaches deep into saguaro, organ pipe cactus, and agave flowers, and it pollinates plants that few other animals ever visit. It's a rare comeback story: once endangered, the bat recovered enough to come off the US endangered species list entirely. Every summer, a wave of these bats crosses the border out of Mexico, chasing the flowers of saguaro, organ pipe cactus, and agave north into Arizona. Nothing about this bat looks built for hunting insects. It’s built to drink.

A tongue longer than its own head

A lesser long-nosed bat doesn’t look built for chewing. Its muzzle runs long and narrow, tapering to a small triangular nose-leaf, and the lower teeth have all but disappeared to leave room for the tongue. That tongue unrolls deep into a flower and works almost like a mop, brush-tipped and built to soak up nectar in quick licks. The bat itself is pale brown to grizzled gray, with short rounded ears and eyes noticeably bigger than those of most of the insect-hunting bats sharing its range, useful for spotting pale flowers glowing in the dark.

Southern Arizona has a close look-alike in the Mexican long-tongued bat, which shows up at the same feeders and works the same flowers. The surest tell is the tail: this bat has none at all, while its cousin carries a small one poking past the edge of the flight membrane. This species also runs noticeably larger and stockier. The California leaf-nosed bat is easier to rule out once you look closely, with a blunt face, a much bigger spear-shaped nose-leaf, and ears more than twice as long.

The nectar corridor: from Sonora to the Sky Islands

This bat doesn’t stick around Arizona year-round. It winters far south in central Mexico, then follows blooming cactus and agave north each spring, arriving in the Sonoran Desert borderlands by early summer. Records cluster from May into September. Most sightings come from southern Arizona, with a smaller share reaching the far southwestern corner of New Mexico and, rarely, West Texas. By fall, nearly the whole population turns south again. A summer visit here is a stopover on a much longer loop, not a permanent home.

Arizona still matters a great deal inside that narrow window. It holds the northern edge of the species’ breeding range, and maternity roosts in the Patagonia, Huachuca, and Chiricahua mountains, plus a few lowland caves south of Tucson, anchor the whole northern population.

Pollinating a desert most bats ignore

Saguaro, organ pipe cactus, and several agaves open their flowers only after dark, and this bat is one of the few animals equipped to visit them. It brushes against the anthers on every stop, carrying pollen from bloom to bloom across a foraging circuit that can stretch many miles from its day roost. Saguaro and organ pipe nectar peak first, in May and June. Agave nectar picks up through the hottest stretch of summer, and by late June the bats start switching to ripening saguaro fruit, bridging the gap between the two bloom events. Few other pollinators work these flowers at night. Biologists consider the bat close to essential for keeping the desert’s biggest, slowest-growing cacti reproducing across much of their US range.

Cave colonies and a single, well-timed pup

Between nights of foraging, the bats pack into warm, humid caves and old mine tunnels, sometimes shoulder to shoulder by the hundreds of thousands at the biggest Arizona and Sonoran sites. Mating happens far south in Mexico, in November and December. The bat delays fertilization until the population starts moving north again, so birth lines up with a female’s arrival at her Arizona maternity roost each spring. She raises a single pup, roosting with it for the first two or three weeks before leaving it with the rest of the colony’s young while she forages. Pups take their first short flights around four weeks old. They’re foraging alone within about ten weeks, in time to follow the colony south before the season turns.

The bat that came off the endangered list

Habitat loss, disturbed roosts, and a decline in wild agave pushed this bat onto the federal endangered species list in 1988. Three decades of work followed: protecting maternity caves, fitting old mines with bat-friendly gates, and coordinating agave conservation across the US-Mexico border. In 2018, wildlife officials removed the bat from the endangered list entirely, the first US bat ever to earn that outcome. It’s a genuine recovery, though not a finished one; the IUCN still rates the global population Near Threatened.

Agave overharvesting for tequila and mezcal keeps stripping nectar sources along the migration corridor. Drought and wildfire are killing wild agaves faster than they can reseed. A handful of large roosts support most of the northern population, so losing even one cave carries outsized risk. Saguaro National Park and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument now factor bat habitat into their management. Continued binational roost protection is a big part of why this comeback has held.
