The Mexican long-tongued bat is a small nectar-feeding bat that visits agave and cactus blooms across the US-Mexico borderlands. Unlike most bats, it can hover motionless at a flower like a hummingbird, and it's a generalist that also takes fruit, pollen, and the odd insect rather than sticking to one plant. It shows up more widely than its nectar-bat cousins, with US records reaching well beyond southern Arizona, occasionally at backyard hummingbird feeders. A hummingbird’s flight, a bat’s face

Everything about this bat’s head is built for one job: reaching deep into a flower. The muzzle stretches out far ahead of the eyes, and the incisors have shrunk to almost nothing. A long, brush-tipped tongue unspools to drain nectar other pollinators can’t reach. It’s one of the few US bats that can hover in place at a bloom, wings blurring like a hummingbird’s. It laps up a meal in a second or two, then darts to the next flower. A small triangular flap of skin sits above the nose, the calling card of the leaf-nosed bat family it belongs to. Its fur runs gray-brown above, paler below.

Telling it apart from the bat next door

The lesser long-nosed bat is the real identification puzzle. Both species hover at the same agave stalks and backyard feeders through the same summer weeks, and both carry an elongated, nectar-feeding snout. The tail is the giveaway. This bat keeps a small visible tail past the edge of its flight membrane; the lesser long-nosed bat has none at all. Two other borderland bats round out the confusion. The California leaf-nosed bat carries a much bigger spear-shaped nose-leaf and long ears built for gleaning insects, not hovering. The pallid bat is pale cream with a blunt, pig-like face and no nose-leaf at all.

A wider American reach than most nectar bats

Most records cluster in southern Arizona, but this bat wanders farther into the US than its nectar-feeding relatives. Occasional records reach as far as California and Texas. It roosts in caves, mine tunnels, and rock crevices across a mix of habitats, from coniferous woodland down to desert washes and even wetland edges. That’s a broader spread than the strict desert-cactus corridor its lookalike depends on. Records build through spring, peak in early-to-mid summer, and fall off by fall as the bats head back toward Mexico. Every summer a few show up somewhere unexpected: a hummingbird feeder in a backyard well outside the usual agave country. It drains the reservoir overnight, a visitor most homeowners never actually see.

A generalist’s menu

Nectar and pollen make up most of the diet, but this bat doesn’t stop there. It switches to ripening fruit late in the season and picks off insects on the wing. That flexibility sets it apart from the lesser long-nosed bat’s near-total reliance on agave and columnar cactus. It’s been recorded working the flowers of the Shaving Brush Tree, a wide-blossomed relative of the baobab family, on top of the usual agave and saguaro blooms. That willingness to take whatever’s flowering keeps it fed even in years when one plant has a poor bloom.

Small roosts, not big colonies

Day roosts are caves, abandoned mine tunnels, and rock fissures, chosen for warmth and humidity as much as darkness. Unlike some of its cave-roosting relatives, it doesn’t form the huge, tightly packed colonies numbering in the thousands. Groups tend to run small and loosely organized, sometimes just a handful of bats sharing a chamber. That looser social structure may be part of why single bats turn up so often at isolated feeders far from any known roost.

One pup, timed to a moving bloom

Mating happens on the wintering grounds farther south, and pregnancy is timed so birth lines up with the mother’s arrival at a summer roost. She usually raises a single pup, occasionally twins, feeding it at the roost for the first few weeks before it starts test flights. Wild lifespan is short for a mammal, and the return trip south each fall is the least understood stretch of its year.

Near Threatened, and tied to a fragile food web

The IUCN lists this bat as Near Threatened. Agave overharvesting for tequila and mezcal production strips out the wild bloom stalks it depends on along its migration route. Drought is also killing off paniculate agaves faster than new ones can replace them. This bat pollinates plants that can take a decade to flower even once, so losing its nighttime visits has consequences that outlast any single bad season. Roost protection on both sides of the border helps. So does protected cactus and agave habitat inside Arizona’s national parks and monuments, the biggest lever for keeping its narrow seasonal visit intact.
