Long-tailed weasels are Idaho’s largest weasel species, hunting mice and voles almost exclusively and following prey into whatever lava-rock crevice, forest edge, or wetland margin holds the densest rodent population, which is why records spread across Craters of the Moon’s volcanic terrain, Boise and Caribou-Targhee national forests, and the Sawtooth high country alike.
Records climb through spring to a July peak, nearly eight times the February low, tracking the stretch when this year’s kits are old enough to hunt alongside their mother and become easier to spot. NatureServe rates the species secure (S5) in Idaho, even though its lean, elongated build keeps it naturally hard to notice compared with the state’s larger predators.
