Merriam’s pocket mouse turns up widely across the Texas Hill Country, with records clustering around Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge and Devils River State Natural Area, where dry grassland and shrubby limestone edges give this tiny rodent loose soil to dig into and scattered seeds to gather. Fur-lined cheek pouches let it carry a night’s harvest home dry, without wetting or chewing it along the way.

Texas records peak in June and July, which likely reflects both the season’s insect and seed abundance and how much easier a nocturnal mouse the size of a thumb is to document when field surveys are active, not a true summer population spike. With 862 records, Texas is the most heavily documented part of this species’ range, and NatureServe rates it secure (S5) statewide, consistent with its broad Hill Country presence.
