Muskrats occupy marshes, ponds, irrigation canals, and slow river margins across Idaho, including the wetland network of the Snake River Plain. Look for low vegetation houses, bank burrows, clipped cattails, and narrow swimming wakes at places such as Camas and Deer Flat refuges.
They remain active year-round, though ice and dense vegetation can hide them. Reports peak from February through April, when open water and thinning cover can make animals and sign easier to detect.
