No dorsal fin, a callosity fingerprint

A flat black back with nothing rising off it is the first clue. This whale carries no dorsal fin at all, unlike almost every other large whale sharing its coast. The second clue is on the head: rough, pale patches of raised skin called callosities. Their pattern is unique to each animal, much like a fingerprint. Researchers photograph that pattern to track individual whales across decades. That’s how so much is known about a species most people never see up close.

A commute between calving grounds and feeding grounds

Confirmed reports trace a narrow corridor along the Atlantic coast. Whales head south to calve off Georgia and Florida in winter, then travel north to feed off New England and Canada the rest of the year. North Carolina sits squarely on that route, and its 28 documented records reflect a species passing through rather than settling down. A sighting anywhere along this coast is a snapshot of a whale mid-journey, not proof of where it lives full time.

Feeding with an open mouth, not a lunge

It feeds by swimming slowly through dense patches of tiny crustaceans, mouth held open the whole time. It strains prey through baleen plates rather than lunging and snapping shut, unlike many other whales. That slow, steady style keeps it near the surface for long stretches. Unfortunately, that puts it directly in the path of ship traffic along one of the busiest coastlines in the country.

Two threats standing between here and recovery

The IUCN lists the species as critically endangered, and the population has fallen to only a few hundred animals. Entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with vessels are the two threats researchers point to most often. Both happen along the same narrow strip of coast the whale already has to cross twice a year. Protecting that corridor, not just counting whales inside it, is what actually moves the needle for a species this close to the edge.
