Norway rat reports are dense around the National Mall, the Potomac River waterfront, and the Anacostia River, the District of Columbia’s most heavily trafficked and built-up corridors. That pattern tracks the species’ introduced, human-dependent lifestyle rather than any natural habitat preference.

This rat digs rather than climbs, burrowing under sidewalks, through storm drains, and along riverbanks and building foundations. It originated in the grasslands of Central Asia and has since ridden cargo ships and trade routes to nearly every port city on Earth, DC’s waterfront included.

It’s one of the most frequently recorded mammals in the district’s dataset, logged in every month with no sharp seasonal dip. That reflects both a genuinely large presence and the fact that an urban rat is easier to spot and report than a shy woodland species.
