A Eurasian burrower that followed people everywhere
Every Norway rat in the United States traces back to stock that crossed the Atlantic within the last few centuries. The species started out in the grasslands and scrublands of Central Asia, not Norway. The name is an old mistake. An 18th-century naturalist assumed English rats had arrived on Norwegian trade ships, and the label stuck. Norway rats have since spread to every continent except Antarctica, moving wherever people ship cargo, build ports, and store grain.
Crossing an ocean didn’t change much about how this rat lives. It still digs. It still needs food, water, and something solid to hide under. What changed is the neighborhood. A burrow that once opened onto a riverbank now opens under a loading dock, a barn foundation, or a crack in a city sidewalk.

Norway rat or black rat? Look at the build, not the color
Coat color is the least reliable clue here. Both Norway rats and black rats run from gray-brown to nearly black, and lighting changes how either one looks. Build is what actually separates them.
A Norway rat is the heavier, thicker animal. It has a blunt nose, small ears that don’t reach past the eye when folded forward, and a tail usually shorter than its head and body combined. It moves low and close to the ground, and it doesn’t climb well.
A black rat is built for climbing. It’s slimmer and sharper-faced, with large ears and a tail longer than its body. Find a rat in rafters, palm fronds, or vines, and it’s very likely a black rat. Find a heavy rat digging near a foundation or a drain, and Norway rat is the safer bet. A house mouse rarely causes confusion once a rat is full grown; the size difference is obvious.
Life underground: burrows, sewers, and waterfronts
Digging is this species’ real specialty. Burrows run under slabs, along stream banks, through brush piles, and beneath sheds. Most have more than one entrance, so the animal always has an escape route. In cities, that same instinct plays out inside walls, crawl spaces, sewer lines, and the gaps under pavement.

Occurrence records cluster close to sea level, in the low country near rivers, ports, and cities, and thin out fast with elevation. That’s not a hard biological limit. It’s a reflection of where the food, water, and shelter this rat needs actually concentrate, since docks, farms, and basements rarely sit high in the mountains. Most sightings cluster from dusk into full night, though a hungry or crowded population will show up in daylight too.
An omnivore’s diet, built from whatever’s on offer
Grain, seeds, fruit, meat scraps, insects, eggs, pet food, garbage, and carrion are all fair game. Seeds and small invertebrates make up the biggest shares of a typical diet, with fruit and other plant matter rounding it out. The real story is flexibility. Near water, this rat feeds along banks and wet edges. On a farm, it keys in on stored feed. In an apartment building, spilled garbage and a warm wall cavity are often enough to keep a small colony going.
Breeding fast enough to fill a burrow system in a season
A female Norway rat can be pregnant again within days of finishing a litter. Over a year, that adds up to several batches of pups. Young are born blind and helpless in a nest tucked into a burrow, wall cavity, or other hidden space. They grow fast, and they’re capable of breeding themselves within months.
That same reproductive speed made the species useful to science. The albino Norway rat became one of the first animals domesticated purely for research. Today’s laboratory rats, along with pet fancy rats, trace back to wild stock like this one. The docile animal in a pet-store cage and the wary burrower under a dumpster are, genetically, the same species living very different lives.
Records that trace people, not a wild range
GBIF records put Norway rats in most US states, but that map says more about where people have built things than where the species is biologically suited to live. New York alone accounts for roughly a third of all US records. That reflects dense infrastructure and a lot of people watching for rats, not a sign the species is scarce everywhere else.
A county with rat records usually has a port, a farm, a landfill, a university, or a wastewater system nearby. It rarely means the surrounding forest or desert holds rats too. Records cluster wherever people and rodent-control crews spend their time, and that’s built infrastructure first. Reading the map this way is the honest way to read it: it traces human settlement as much as it traces the animal itself.
