The Norway rat is introduced in New Jersey and is most closely associated with buildings, refuse, transport corridors, and disturbed waterfronts. Records attached to South Mountain, Palisades, and Great Swamp should be read as nearby observer locations, not as recommendations for wildlife viewing or evidence that protected habitat is the species’ center of abundance.

Reports occur throughout the year and rise in September and October. With 131 iNaturalist records, the curve represents a small, opportunistic sample of a largely urban and nocturnal animal.
