A shrew built to eat nonstop
Like other members of its family, the ornate shrew runs on an extremely high metabolism that forces it to hunt almost around the clock, resting only in short bursts between meals. It’s tiny, dark gray-brown, with a pointed snout and small eyes built more for smell and touch than sight. Some shrews in this genus produce mildly toxic saliva that helps subdue struggling insect prey, a rare trait among mammals.
Found only in California, and surprisingly widespread in elevation
Every confirmed record sits inside California, but within the state this shrew turns up in an unusually broad range of settings, from coastal wetlands and agricultural ditches near sea level to mountain habitat above 8,850 feet. Half of all sightings come from below about 525 feet, reflecting how much of its core range sits in lowland marsh and streamside habitat, but records at high elevation show it isn’t limited to the coast. Its reliance on damp ground, whether a coastal marsh, an irrigation ditch, or a mountain seep, makes the shrew more sensitive to wetland loss than many of California’s small mammals, even though its overall numbers remain healthy.
Eight subspecies, one already gone
Biologists recognize eight subspecies of ornate shrew across California, shaped by the patchy wetlands and river drainages that isolate one population from the next. One of those, the tule shrew, is already extinct, known only from four specimens collected in 1905 and never documented since. Another, the Suisun ornate shrew of the San Francisco Bay marshes, remains a specific conservation concern today even though the species as a whole is common enough to rate Least Concern.
Diet and a fast, short life
The ornate shrew eats almost entirely insects, topping up with scavenged carrion when it finds it. Females can raise a large litter of around five young at a time, but few shrews live past a year and a half in the wild. That combination, big litters and short lives, is typical of small insect-eaters running on a metabolism built for speed rather than longevity.
