Plains pocket mice turn up in the Trans-Pecos desert and mountain foothills around Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains, and the Davis Mountains, the driest, most rugged corner of Texas and the edge of this species’ broader Great Plains and desert range. Thin, sandy soil and grass cover in that region suit its digging, seed-caching habits.
April stands out sharply in the state’s 32 records, with 12 sightings, more than a third of the total, followed by a smaller June-July bump; both likely mark seasons when this small nocturnal rodent is more active above ground and easier for observers to find, not a true count of how many are out there. NatureServe rates the species S5, Secure, in Texas, the most reassuring rank in this batch and a sign that despite its rare-bucket occurrence ranking, the population itself isn’t a conservation concern.
