Small enough to fit in your palm
A full-grown pygmy rabbit weighs less than a can of soda. Adults run about 9.25 to 11.5 inches long. Most tip the scale between 13 and 17.5 ounces, and females are typically a bit heavier than males. That makes it the smallest rabbit native to North America, barely a third the size of the cottontails sharing its sagebrush flats. The coat is a uniform slate gray with no white anywhere on it. Ears are short and rounded, not the tall thin ears cottontails carry, and there’s no fluffy white tail flash, just a small gray tuft blending into the rump.
Two cottontails overlap with it across parts of its range. The mountain cottontail is nearly twice the pygmy rabbit’s weight, with tall ears and a fluffy white tail. The desert cottontail is larger still, with long thinly furred ears and a white tail of its own, and it favors lower, drier ground. The size gap alone is usually enough to tell them apart in the field.

The only rabbit in the country that digs its own den
Nearly every other rabbit and hare native to North America moves into a den something else dug, a hole abandoned by a badger, a marmot, or a ground squirrel, or it simply beds down in a surface nest. The pygmy rabbit digs its own, and outside of Mexico’s volcano rabbit, it’s the only species on the continent that does. Burrows sit at the base of a sagebrush plant, usually on a north- or east-facing slope where the soil is loose enough to dig. They typically open with four or five entrances, sometimes as few as two or as many as ten. Below ground, the tunnels widen into chambers roughly three feet down.
Snow changes the routine. Where drifts bury the sagebrush for two months or longer each winter, pygmy rabbits tunnel just beneath the surface instead, linking one shrub to the next through snow tunnels about the same size as the summer burrows. A rabbit that might otherwise range 200 to 330 feet from its den barely leaves these runs until the thaw. Weasels are small enough to follow it underground, making them its most persistent predator. Coyotes, badgers, bobcats, great horned owls, and northern harriers all take pygmy rabbits caught out in the open.

A life built entirely around sagebrush
Big sagebrush supplies both food and cover. In winter it can make up as much as 99 percent of what a pygmy rabbit eats, dropping to roughly half in summer once grasses and forbs like Indian ricegrass, needlegrass, and Sandberg bluegrass become available. Few animals in the sagebrush sea depend this heavily on one shrub, which makes the pygmy rabbit especially vulnerable. A rangeland fire or a field cleared for crops doesn’t just remove shelter; it can wipe out the only food source a local population has.
Pygmy rabbits are most active around dawn and dusk and through much of the night. They rest in burrows or dense sagebrush cover during the hottest and coldest hours. They eat nothing but plants, a trait recorded across their whole life history, and rarely stray far from the cover that hides them from predators.

Where the records cluster
The established range covers the sagebrush steppe of the Great Basin and the neighboring intermountain valleys. That includes southern Idaho, northern Nevada, northeastern California, southeastern Oregon, and Wyoming, plus a separate pocket in southwestern Montana near the Idaho border. A genetically distinct population also survives in Washington’s Columbia Basin, isolated from the main range by the Columbia and Snake River drainages.
Forty-seven georeferenced occurrence records logged since 2000 show the heaviest concentration in Wyoming and Idaho, followed by Nevada, Washington, California, and Oregon. A sample this size mostly reflects survey effort, not true numbers on the ground. Elevations recorded alongside those sightings run from about 1,475 to 9,500 feet, with half of all records sitting above roughly 6,200 feet, in keeping with a species tied to high desert shrub steppe rather than low valley floors. Records turn up across nearly every month of the year, pointing to year-round residency rather than seasonal migration.
Short breeding season, tough odds for young
Breeding runs on a tight schedule that shifts with latitude. It’s roughly March through May in Idaho, and as early as February farther south in Utah. Litters average close to six kits, and most females raise two to three of them in a good year. Kits born earliest in the season tend to grow largest, since they’ve had more time to fatten up before their first winter.
That first winter is brutal. Annual adult mortality has been measured as high as 88 percent in Idaho, concentrated in late winter and early spring when sagebrush cover thins and predators hunt hardest. Females can begin breeding within about eight months of birth. A pygmy rabbit that survives its first winter is sexually mature well before its first birthday, and wild pygmy rabbits rarely live past four years.
Saving the Columbia Basin population
The Columbia Basin population never recovered from decades of sagebrush lost to farmland. Its genetic diversity collapsed as the group shrank, and the last purebred Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit died in captivity in 2008. Rather than let that lineage disappear, the Oregon Zoo, Washington State University, and Washington’s Department of Fish and Wildlife crossed the survivors with Idaho and Nevada stock and rebuilt a breeding population almost from scratch. More than 1,300 kits have been born in semi-wild enclosures in Douglas and Grant Counties since 2011, and over 1,200 of those rabbits have since been released onto Sagebrush Flat and a second recovery site on Nature Conservancy land.
That Columbia Basin population is still listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, even though the IUCN rates the species as a whole as Least Concern. It’s a split verdict: a healthy core across the Great Basin, and one hard-won exception surviving at its northwestern edge because people decided it was worth the effort to rebuild.
