A whale identified only recently
For most of the twentieth century, biologists lumped a small population of Gulf of Mexico whales in with Bryde’s whale, a wide-ranging tropical species found around the world. Genetic work and skull comparisons eventually showed the Gulf population was different enough to stand on its own. In 2021 it was formally described as Rice’s whale, named for the researcher who first suspected something was off decades earlier. It looks broadly similar to its relatives: a sleek, dark gray body and a low ridged back. But it carries a single prominent ridge along the top of the snout that other Bryde’s-type whales lack in the same form.
A whale that doesn’t migrate
Most large whales cross entire ocean basins each year, feeding in one region and breeding in another. Rice’s whale skips that pattern entirely. Photo-identification and tagging studies show the same individuals returning to the same patch of deep water off the Florida Panhandle year after year, with only occasional wandering as far as Texas. That kind of site fidelity is rare among baleen whales its size. It means the whale’s entire world may fit inside a single stretch of continental slope, which is exactly what the two states in the national record suggest.
Feeding near the seafloor, not at the surface
Where a blue or minke whale lunges through surface swarms of krill or schooling fish, Rice’s whale hunts differently. It dives deep along the edge of the continental shelf and feeds close to the seafloor, likely targeting fish and squid concentrated near the bottom rather than prey visible from a boat. That habit makes the species far harder to observe than a surface-feeding whale. Much of what’s known about its diet and diving behavior comes from a small number of tagged animals rather than direct sightings.
The rarest whale in US waters
The IUCN lists Rice’s whale as Critically Endangered, and researchers estimate the entire population at under 100 individuals. That population is confined to one of the busiest stretches of ocean for oil and gas activity in the country. Vessel strikes are the single greatest documented threat, since the whale’s slow, shallow surfacing style leaves little time to avoid an approaching ship. Seismic surveys, drilling infrastructure, and the ever-present risk of another major oil spill add further pressure on a population too small to absorb many losses. A single bad year could meaningfully change the outlook for the entire species.
