The complete county distribution, spread across 25 California counties. Every occurrence record falls in one county, so these sum to the total. Counties from GBIF and US Census boundaries.

Shadow chipmunk reports are concentrated in California’s wooded northwestern corner, where dense conifers and brush create the shaded cover behind the name. Point Reyes and Golden Gate records mark the broader coastal setting, while the Channel Islands suggestion sits outside the clearest habitat story for this chipmunk.

Observations surge in June, remain high in July, and peak in August before dropping sharply after October. No December records appear in this series. That summer-heavy shape fits the months when chipmunks and hikers are both active, but it can’t separate true seasonal behavior from easier warm-weather detection.
