All 106 Florida short-finned pilot whale records come from GBIF, with none logged on iNaturalist, a split that points toward stranding data rather than live sightings of a species known for mass beachings on Florida’s coast. Canaveral National Seashore is the only named place in the state’s records, and it holds just a single report.
Records peak sharply in January and February, with 22 and 20 logged, then drop off through the rest of the year. That winter cluster likely tracks stranding season more than steady offshore presence, even though Florida lists the species as native to its waters.
