The complete county distribution, spread across 8 Texas counties. Every occurrence record falls in one county, so these sum to the total. Counties from GBIF and US Census boundaries.

Southwestern Texas pocket gophers spend nearly all their lives underground, pushing up the small fan-shaped soil mounds that mark an active burrow system rather than showing themselves aboveground. That habit alone explains why Texas has only 45 records for this species: gophers aren’t hard to find because they’re scarce, they’re hard to find because they rarely surface.

The records that do exist cluster around Big Bend National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and the Davis Mountains, all high desert and mountain grassland where the sandy, diggable soils this gopher needs are common. Reports turn up in nearly every month with no single dominant peak, which fits a species whose activity happens mostly out of sight rather than one with a clear breeding or dispersal season.

With records this thin, the occasional-abundance ranking says more about how little ground has been surveyed than about how common the animal actually is across its Trans-Pecos range.
