A gopher, or a subspecies of one

Strecker’s pocket gopher was originally described as its own species, but current taxonomy folds it into Geomys personatus, the Texas pocket gopher, as a regional form rather than a distinct one. That reclassification is common in this genus, where pocket gophers vary subtly from valley to valley. They rarely travel far enough to interbreed with neighboring populations. Whatever its current rank, the animal itself is a compact, thick-bodied burrower with small eyes and powerful front claws. Fur-lined external cheek pouches let it haul food back to the burrow.

A range as narrow as the soil it needs

Every confirmed record for this gopher comes from South Texas. That narrowness is not an accident of survey effort so much as a real biological limit. Pocket gophers depend on soil they can actually dig through, and sandy, well-drained ground of the kind found in parts of South Texas suits them far better than heavy clay or rocky substrate. Where the soil changes, the gopher’s range simply stops. That makes this one of the more soil-bound mammals in the state.

A life spent almost entirely below ground

Like other pocket gophers, this species spends nearly all its time in an extensive tunnel system. It only rarely surfaces and almost never ventures far from a burrow entrance. That underground life makes it far more likely to be detected by mounded soil pushed up at tunnel openings than by an actual sighting. Solitary by nature, each gopher defends its own tunnel network and tolerates neighbors only briefly during breeding.
