The mole behind the mound
Townsend’s mole has velvety dark fur, a pointed pink snout, tiny eyes, and wide front feet turned outward like spades. Its ears have no external flaps. Those features suit an animal that pushes through soil rather than open air. Compared with other western moles, its large body and broad forefeet are useful clues, although a clear view is unusual.
Most encounters begin with earth movement. A line of raised ground marks a shallow feeding tunnel, while a mound shows where deeper excavation reached the surface. Mole hills aren’t entrances left open for regular use. The animal usually plugs the tunnel and continues working below.
Why wet ground matters
The species lives from southwestern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon. It favors deep, moist soils in meadows, pastures, floodplains, gardens, and coastal grasslands. Soil must be soft enough to dig yet stable enough to keep a tunnel from collapsing. Saturated ground can force a mole upward, while hard summer soil restricts shallow travel.
Most records lie at lower elevations, where broad valleys and coastal plains provide suitable ground. A few higher reports show that elevation alone doesn’t set the boundary. Soil texture, moisture, and food matter more. Records are sparse in California, at the southern edge of the accepted range, so absence from a recent national threshold shouldn’t be treated as proof of local disappearance.
A tunnel system that works like a trapline
Townsend’s moles patrol branching passages for earthworms and other small soil animals. Worms that fall into an active tunnel can be detected through touch and smell. The mole also takes insects and their young. It doesn’t eat plant roots as its main food, although digging can disturb seedlings.
Shallow tunnels are temporary feeding routes. Deeper passages provide safer travel, nesting chambers, and refuge from surface weather. The animal works at different hours rather than following a simple day-night schedule. Underground temperature and hunger are more useful guides than daylight.
Solitary lives and spring litters
Adults usually occupy separate tunnel systems outside the breeding season. Mating occurs during winter, and females produce a spring litter in a grass-lined nest below ground. Young moles grow quickly before leaving to establish their own tunnels. That dispersal period may bring them briefly to the surface, where owls, mammals, and vehicles pose risks.
The species’ strong digging changes soil structure. Tunneling mixes layers, moves organic material, and creates routes used by water and smaller animals. In lawns or crops, the same activity can be unwelcome. The mole’s presence, however, doesn’t automatically mean it caused every damaged root nearby.
Living beside people
Drainage, paving, intensive soil disturbance, and the loss of wet meadow habitat can remove suitable ground. Local control also affects individuals where mounds conflict with farming or landscaping. Because the animal is mostly hidden, records reflect trapping, surveys, and chance surface encounters more than true numbers.
Townsend’s mole remains broadly established in Oregon and Washington. Protecting connected patches of deep, moist soil supports more than one burrowing mammal. It also preserves the earthworm and insect communities that keep this powerful excavator underground.
