A heavy-bodied vole of wet ground
Townsend’s vole is among the largest North American voles. It has a stout body, blunt face, small rounded ears, and a tail that is longer than many similar voles’ tails. The back is dark brown to almost black, while the underside is grayer. Young animals are often darker than adults.
Size helps separate it from the smaller creeping vole and gray-tailed vole where their ranges meet. Habitat adds another clue. Townsend’s voles favor damp grasslands, marsh edges, wet meadows, and fields with thick cover. A dark, robust vole moving through lush lowland grass fits better than one found in dry woodland or rocky upland.
Their curved claws open shallow burrows and maintain surface runways beneath vegetation. Those paths connect feeding areas, nest chambers, and escape cover. The animals can also swim and dive, useful skills in ground that floods seasonally.
A coastal range shaped by moisture
The species occupies a narrow strip of western North America. Its main US range lies in western Washington and Oregon, continuing north into southwestern British Columbia. It reaches the extreme northwest corner of California, but it isn’t a statewide California animal.
Most US records fall in the two Pacific Northwest states. That pattern matches the vole’s dependence on mild, moist lowlands and dense plant growth. Mountains, dry interior basins, and large breaks in suitable habitat limit its spread inland.
Observations appear in every month because the vole remains active through the year. That doesn’t mean every site holds equal numbers at all times. Small-mammal records depend heavily on trapping studies, access, and where researchers work. Dense clusters can mark repeated sampling as much as especially large populations.
Grass is both cover and food
Townsend’s voles eat grasses, sedges, rushes, and other green plants. They clip stems along their runways and may also take roots, seeds, and bark when conditions change. Thick vegetation supplies food close to shelter, reducing the time an animal must spend exposed.
They’re important prey for owls, hawks, snakes, foxes, coyotes, mink, skunks, and weasels. Rapid breeding helps vole populations recover from heavy losses. Females can produce several litters when food and weather are favorable, and young mature quickly.
Numbers can rise and fall sharply from year to year. Those swings affect predators and plant communities, but a short run of observations can’t describe the full cycle. Local flooding, drought, mowing, grazing, and vegetation height can all change survival and nesting cover.
Life in shared runways
Townsend’s voles aren’t strongly social in the way colony-forming rodents are. Home ranges overlap, especially when numbers are high, and aggressive encounters help organize access to food and mates. Females defend space around nests more strongly during breeding.
Runways may also be used by other small mammals. Townsend’s voles compete with similar plant-eating rodents, while smaller species can respond to changes in their numbers and habitat use. The result isn’t a simple winner across every meadow. Water level, plant cover, season, and predator pressure reshape those relationships.
The species is considered secure across its broad range, but wet lowlands are easily altered. Drainage, development, intensive mowing, and loss of dense cover can remove habitat locally. Protecting connected marshes and grassy fields also supports the predators and other small mammals tied to the same food web.
