Trowbridge’s shrew is closely tied to cool, covered ground. California reports fit moist forest floors, brushy stream edges, and deep leaf litter, especially in the state’s northern and coastal landscapes; exposed wetlands around the Salton Sea aren’t representative habitat.
Records climb through late spring and peak in July, with another noticeable rise in December. That uneven pattern probably blends animal activity with trapping and museum survey schedules. Documentation spans every month, yet a shrew living beneath litter can remain unseen even where it occurs, so gaps shouldn’t be treated as absence.
