Yellow-nosed cotton rats are the cotton rats of dry upland edges, where a yellow-brown muzzle flashes through bunchgrass, oak litter, and rocky pinyon-juniper openings. In the United States, Sigmodon ochrognathus is not a broad eastern grassland animal like the hispid cotton rat. It is a borderlands specialist, reaching north from Mexico into Arizona, New Mexico, and the Trans-Pecos of Texas, with most U.S. records clustered in Madrean foothills and nearby mountain grasslands.
A cotton rat built for dry uplands
This species looks like a compact, coarse-furred vole at first glance, but the tail gives it away as a cotton rat: scaly, thinly haired, and shorter than the body. Adults usually run about 7 to 10 inches in total length. They weigh roughly 1.8 to 3.4 ounces, putting them well below a woodrat and heavier-bodied than most deer mice. The coat is grizzled gray-brown above, paler below, and noticeably bristly rather than soft. That’s only part of the picture.
The namesake field mark is the warm ocher wash across the nose, cheeks, and eye area. It can look subtle in shade or on worn animals, but a clear view of the face separates it from Arizona cotton rat, which is darker and more uniformly gray-brown. Hispid cotton rat is larger, shaggier, and more associated with lusher lowland grass or weedy cover. Brush mouse is much slimmer, with a longer tail, larger ears, and a cleaner white belly.

Where the U.S. range narrows to the borderlands
The yellow-nosed cotton rat is primarily a Mexican species, with its U.S. range forming a northern extension into the Southwest. In Arizona and New Mexico it follows sky-island foothills, Madrean grassland, oak woodland edges, and pinyon-juniper margins. In Texas, records concentrate in the Trans-Pecos, where rocky grass-shrub slopes resemble the species’ Mexican upland habitat more than the wetter grasslands used by other cotton rats.
Elevation is a useful clue. U.S. records climb from warm foothills into mid-elevation woodland, with the center of activity around the 4,000 to 6,000-foot band. The species is not a low desert flat specialist, and it is not a high conifer-forest rodent. It does best in the uneven zone between those extremes: rocky slopes, gravelly washes, oak-juniper edges, scattered bunchgrass, and open shrub cover where short runways can thread between stones and grass clumps.

Runways, food, and daylight movement
Yellow-nosed cotton rats move through the world from ground level, clipping and pressing narrow tunnels through grass, litter, and low herbaceous cover. In good habitat, the animal may be less visible than its sign: short runways, cut stems, feeding spots, and small openings at the base of grass clumps or rocks. The runway habit lets a diurnal or active on and off around the clock rodent feed under cover while staying close to escape routes.
The diet is mainly plant material. Grasses, sedges, forbs, and seeds make up the core menu, with blue grama and other dryland grasses especially important where they dominate upland openings. Cotton rats are not delicate seed-pickers. They shear stems, crop green blades, take seeds when available, and may cache dried plant material below ground. That feeding style links population size closely to rainfall and grass production.
Small predators track that pulse. Barn owls, hawks, snakes, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, badgers, and other generalists all take rodents in this size class. Daylight activity exposes yellow-nosed cotton rats to visual hunters more often than a strictly nocturnal mouse, while their runways and thick grass cover reduce the time spent in the open.

Breeding for a boom-and-bust landscape
Like other cotton rats, yellow-nosed cotton rats mature quickly and breed early. Females can become reproductive within weeks, gestation lasts about a month, and litters commonly include two to six young. The young develop fast, which lets local populations rebound quickly after rain produces fresh grass and seed.
That life history fits a dry upland rodent. Good monsoon seasons can create a visible jump in juveniles, fresh runways, and feeding sign. Drought reverses the pattern. Sparse cover, poor forage, and heavy predation can thin local populations until the next productive season. Most wild individuals likely live less than a year, even though related life-history data show that cotton rats can survive much longer under protected conditions.
Why this species stays regional
The IUCN treats the yellow-nosed cotton rat as Least Concern, and its broad Mexican distribution keeps the species from being globally rare. Its U.S. footprint is much narrower. In the Southwest, its future depends on the condition of Madrean grassland, oak-juniper edges, and rocky upland mosaics rather than on generic “grassland” alone.
The main habitat pressures are local and cumulative: shrub encroachment into former grassland, altered fire patterns, overgrazing in sensitive upland openings, groundwater changes that reshape canyon and wash vegetation, and hotter droughts that reduce grass cover. None of those pressures make the species an immediate national conservation emergency, but they can shrink or fragment the thin U.S. edge of its range.
For field identification, the useful summary is simple: look for a small, coarse cotton rat in dry rocky grassland or open woodland, then check the face. A yellow-brown nose and eye wash on a heavy, short-tailed Sigmodon points to yellow-nosed cotton rat. A larger, darker cotton rat in lusher lowland grass points toward hispid cotton rat, while a slimmer mouse with a long tail and pale feet belongs somewhere outside the cotton rats entirely.
