A rabbit relative that never grew a tail
Pikas are lagomorphs, the order that also holds rabbits and hares, but they neither look nor act like either one. An adult American pika runs about 6 to 8 inches long. It weighs roughly 4 to 6 ounces. The animal is a rounded ball of mottled brown-gray fur on short legs, with big dark eyes and rounded ears. There is no visible tail. The whiskers are long and constantly working, brushing rock as the animal navigates gaps it seems to know by memory. Early naturalists left behind a string of folk names that still turn up in field guides: whistling hare, rock rabbit, little chief hare, cony. All four describe the same stout, short-eared, tailless animal that spends its life within a few dozen yards of one pile of rock.

Why elevation decides where a pika can live
Occurrence records show American pikas across every major mountain system of the interior and Pacific West. Reports concentrate in Colorado, Washington, California, Wyoming, Oregon, Utah, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, and Idaho. But the real determinant isn’t latitude. It is elevation, and more specifically how cool the rock stays through summer. The median georeferenced record lies near 10,100 feet. Confirmed reports reach nearly 14,400 feet near mountain summits. A pika’s fur holds body heat extremely well. Direct summer sun can push its temperature toward a lethal threshold within an hour. Populations therefore cluster wherever broken rock stays shaded and cold air pools even in July.
That same heat sensitivity explains an odd wrinkle in where sightings cluster: a small group of records sits far below the high-alpine average, down around 1,300 to 6,600 feet. Those are populations in the cooler, wetter Cascades and the mossy lava-rock talus of the Columbia River Gorge, where the climate itself runs cold enough that pikas don’t need altitude to find a cool refuge. Same species, two different elevation strategies, both built around the same requirement for cold rock.
Haying season: stockpiling a whole winter’s food
American pikas don’t hibernate, and they don’t cache food underground the way a ground squirrel does. Through summer, they clip grasses, sedges, and wildflowers and carry mouthfuls back to a favorite rock. There they build a haypile, a stack of drying vegetation that must feed one animal through a snowbound winter. A pika defends its haypile from neighbors throughout the year. Its size and placement reveal how well an individual is prepared for winter. The diet is essentially all plant matter, and nearly all annual food gathering happens during summer haying. By the time snow seals the rocks in autumn, the pile must already be finished.

The eenk that gives it away
Long before a hiker spots a pika, they usually hear one. The alarm call is a short, high, nasal bark delivered from a raised lookout rock and repeated at intervals as the animal watches for hawks, weasels, and neighboring pikas testing its territory. That call is the reason for the “whistling hare” name, even though the voice reads more as a bark than a whistle. Field-observation records show American pikas are strongly diurnal, most active from mid-morning into early afternoon, exactly the window when someone moving through talus is most likely to hear that call. American ermines and long-tailed weasels are the pika’s most persistent predators, slim and long-bodied enough to follow directly into the same rock gaps that keep larger animals out.
Territories, mates, and a short pika life
Pikas breed young for a small mammal that lives at altitude. Females reach sexual maturity at around 11 months old, carry a litter for about 30 days, and typically raise around three young per litter, often across two litters in a single season. That fast turnover offsets a short lifespan; most wild pikas live only a few years, though the oldest confirmed individuals have reached seven. Outside of brief breeding encounters, adults stay solitary and territorial, each one holding its own stretch of talus and haypile, spaced from its neighbors across the boulder field in a loose, overlapping mosaic that field biologists can map largely by listening for calls.

Built for cold, exposed to a warming climate
The IUCN currently rates the American pika a species of least concern rangewide, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service concluded the species as a whole does not warrant federal Endangered Species Act protection despite a formal petition to list it. That rangewide picture sits alongside a well-documented pattern of local disappearances, especially at the low-elevation, southern, and Great Basin edges of the range, where warming summers and shrinking snowpack have pushed some populations out of talus they occupied a century ago. A pika’s extreme heat sensitivity leaves it almost nowhere to go once its home rock pile warms past its tolerance, short of moving further upslope, and mountains only go so high. That combination makes the species one of the most closely watched indicators of how a warming climate reshapes life at altitude, even while it remains common across the bulk of its western mountain range.
