A desert sheep far from North Africa
Aoudads, also called Barbary sheep, are native to the rocky drylands of North Africa. People brought them to the United States for zoos, private collections, and hunting ranches. Escapes and releases produced free-ranging populations, especially across western Texas and southern New Mexico, while California contributes a much smaller share of reports.
The species is therefore introduced in the United States, despite the generated range field describing it as native. Its American distribution reflects human movement followed by successful breeding in the wild. Reports show where people have documented animals, not how many live in each state.
Rugged desert mountains suit aoudads unusually well. They cross ledges, talus, canyon walls, and broken plateaus with confident footing. Nearby flats can provide feeding areas, but steep escape terrain is central to their daily life. They can go for long periods without drinking when fresh plants supply moisture.
Horns, fringe, and a heavy mountain build
Both sexes carry horns that curve outward, backward, and then inward. Mature males usually develop much heavier horns and a more powerful chest. A shaggy curtain of hair hangs from the throat and continues down the front legs, creating the species’ most recognizable feature. The coat is sandy brown and blends well with sunlit rock.
Bighorn sheep lack the long throat-and-leg fringe. Their mature rams also carry massive horns that curl closer beside the face. Domestic sheep and goats can occur in the same broad landscapes, but an aoudad’s combination of sweeping horns, plain brown coat, and hanging fringe is distinctive.
Adult males often live apart from females and younger animals outside the breeding season. Groups may merge where food or water concentrates. They’re most active during the cooler parts of the day, though observation times show activity across much of daylight.

Eating whatever dry country provides
Aoudads graze grasses and browse leaves, shoots, and shrubs. Their flexible diet helps them persist when one food source fails. They climb or rear up to reach vegetation and may travel between rocky bedding areas and more open feeding ground.
That adaptability creates concern where aoudads share land with native bighorn sheep and other grazers. The species can compete for forage, water, and space, particularly during drought. The strength of those effects varies by landscape and population, so a sighting alone can’t reveal ecological pressure.
Mountain lions can kill aoudads in the Southwest, while young animals face additional danger from coyotes and other predators. Cliffs remain an important defense. Alert animals usually climb into difficult ground rather than trying to outrun danger across an open flat.

Breeding and management in the Southwest
Aoudads can breed at different times of year when conditions allow. Females usually bear one young, sometimes twins, after sheltering in rugged terrain. Newborns can follow their mothers quickly, an essential trait where a stationary nest would be vulnerable.
Their conservation story changes across the Atlantic. The IUCN lists the species as Vulnerable in its native range, where hunting, habitat pressure, and competition with livestock have reduced populations. In the American Southwest, wildlife agencies instead manage a nonnative game animal that can spread into new mountain ranges.
Fences rarely contain every individual in steep country, and removal becomes difficult once a population is established. Good management depends on knowing whether animals are enclosed, recently escaped, or part of a reproducing wild herd. That distinction matters for protecting native wildlife while recognizing the aoudad’s striking success in an adopted desert.
