The scale problem with judging a blue whale by eye
No animal alive, and none known from the fossil record, grows larger than a blue whale. That fact makes them oddly hard to identify at sea. From a boat, most of the animal stays underwater, and what surfaces is a long, mottled, slate-blue back with a small, stubby dorsal fin set unusually far toward the tail. The blow is the real giveaway: a tall, straight column that rises well above a humpback’s bushier spout, visible long before the animal itself comes into view. Confusion mostly happens with fin whales, a similarly long, slate-colored relative, but a fin whale’s dorsal fin sits taller and its blow is shorter and less columnar.
A giant that lives on the smallest prey
Blue whales feed almost entirely on krill, tiny drifting crustaceans that swarm by the billions in cold, nutrient-rich water. A lunge-feeding whale opens its mouth wide, expands the pleated throat grooves running down its belly, and engulfs an enormous gulp of water and prey in one motion. It then forces the water back out through its baleen plates while the krill stay trapped inside. It’s an efficient way to fuel a huge body, but it also means the whale depends entirely on finding dense krill patches, and those patches shift with ocean currents and temperature from year to year. Orca attacks on blue whales happen, but they’re rare and mostly aimed at calves rather than full-grown adults.
Why California carries most of the record
Blue whales use both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States, but records here cluster heavily off California, where cold upwelling water concentrates krill close to shore each summer. Sightings climb sharply from spring into midsummer, tracking the same seasonal bloom that draws the whales north to feed, then fall off through autumn as animals move toward winter breeding grounds farther south. Alaska and Hawaii add only a handful of records by comparison. That pattern says more about where krill concentrates and where observers go looking than about a true nationwide range. Blue whales almost certainly pass through far more open ocean than the record shows.
Recovering slowly from a whaling-era collapse
Twentieth-century whaling killed blue whales by the hundreds of thousands before an international ban finally took hold, and the global population still hasn’t recovered anywhere close to its earlier size. The IUCN lists the species as Endangered. Ship strikes are now one of the biggest ongoing threats, since the whales spend long stretches feeding at the surface directly in shipping lanes off California. Entanglement in fishing gear and rising ocean noise add further pressure on a population that breeds slowly even under the best conditions.
