The complete county distribution, spread across 11 California counties. Every occurrence record falls in one county, so these sum to the total. Counties from GBIF and US Census boundaries.

Blue whale reports off California build from May into a July high, remain elevated in August, and then taper through autumn. Only a handful are logged in each winter month, giving the 447-record series a pronounced warm-season shape even though the summary describes observations as year-round.

The place tally only names coastal sites, since blue whales are offshore animals and the counts reflect where people report them from, not where the population is concentrated. The calendar therefore shows when whales were reported, not their population size or their distribution along the California coast.
