Built for flowers

An elongated snout gives this bat a different profile from many insect-hunting bats. Its tongue collects nectar and pollen from deep blossoms. Fruit and insects broaden the diet when flowers change with season or place. By visiting many blooms in one night, the bat can move pollen between plants.

Cave colonies after dark

Buffy flower bats roost in caves, sometimes in large mixed groups with other bats. They leave after dusk and travel through dry forest, scrub, gardens, and other flowering habitats. Flight routes can connect feeding areas with a limited number of suitable caves. Disturbance at one major roost may therefore affect many animals.

An island-centered range

The species is native to islands including Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. Storms can move bats beyond their usual range, and rare mainland reports require strong evidence. Records alone don’t establish a breeding population. Protecting caves and the surrounding feeding landscape matters because neither resource can replace the other.
