Fast travel through branches
Long limbs, grasping hands, and a balancing tail help squirrel monkeys cross thin branches quickly. The tail isn’t used as an extra hand. Groups can contain many animals, but members spread out while feeding. Calls reconnect them when leaves hide nearby companions.
Insects, fruit, and seasonal choices
Insects provide important protein, while fruit supplies much of the remaining diet. The balance shifts as rainfall and fruiting seasons change. Monkeys inspect leaves, bark, and branch tips for small prey. Their busy search can cover several forest layers during one day.
Native and introduced records
The species belongs to northern South America, although its exact limits depend on recent monkey classifications. Populations reported elsewhere often began through human release or escape. Florida records don’t make the animal native there. Counts of observations also can’t reveal colony size without knowing whether repeated reports concern the same group.
