Coyotes didn’t reach Massachusetts until the mid-20th century, crossing in from the north and west after wolves and mountain lions had already been wiped out of New England. They filled that empty predator niche fast, and records now stretch from the pine barrens and dunes of Cape Cod National Seashore to Blue Hills Reservation’s woods on Boston’s doorstep.
Unlike many mammals on this list, coyote records show no strong seasonal swing, staying fairly level across all twelve months. That flat pattern fits an animal that hunts and scavenges year-round rather than timing its activity to a single breeding or feeding season, and it’s just as willing to work suburban edges as it is remote conservation land.
